Red Grooms was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1937.
Painter, sculptor, printmaker, filmmaker and theater designer. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the New School for Social Research, New York.

Grooms currently lives and works in New York City in a studio in lower Manhattan at the intersection of Tribeca and Chinatown, where he has lived for around 40 years.
